This panel discussion, a part of the series initiated around the exhibition 'Zones of Contact: Propositions on the Museum', deliberated upon the altered state of labour with the advent of globalization and their resultant degraded social state. The speakers contemplated the moral right of the artists to represent the disenfranchised body of the labourer, discussing the prospects that art possesses in changing their present condition. Labour historians have time and again pointed to the lack of research and material or the method of interrogating cultural experiences and consciousness of workers. The speakers discussed the new directions in labour discourse that bring forth issues of culture, community, family and gender, that question the idea of a universal experience of labour and foreground multiple and complex identity formations.
