A small town at the turn of a century

Simran Gill’s photographic series- the town at the end of a century were taken by the artist in her hometown- Port Dickinson in Malaysia, one of the biggest port towns in the world in the late 90’s. Here, we see photographs of people taken in various environments; inside their homes, gardens, streets, etc, but instead of seeing faces, we see tropical fruits that are considered ‘exotic’. On the left, you will see a lady sitting on the chair, with a fruit on her head, that merges with the background trees and grass. It almost seems, that the landscape and nature has reclaimed humans, rather than human claiming nature. Simran through these images, addresses complex relationship between various geographies, cultures, the local and the global and how stereotypes and cliches are constructed regarding particular culture or areas.

सिमरन गिल की फोटोग्राफिक सीरीज “ ए स्मॉल टाउन ऐट डी एंड ऑफ़ ए सेंचुरी “ की तस्वीरें कलाकार ने अपने शहर- पोर्ट डिकिंसन में ली, , जो की दुनिया के सबसे बड़े बंदरगाह शहरों में से एक है। यहाँ हम देख सकते हैं कि अनेक लोग, अलग अलग परिस्थितियों, जगहों, जैसे की घर, बाग, गलियों, दुकानों में खड़े और बैठे हैं। दिलचस्प बात यह है की इन सब लोगों के चेहरों की जगह अलग लॉग तरह के फल हैं, जिन्हें ‘एक्सोटिक’ समझा जाता है। बायीं ओर हम देखेंगे की एक महिला कुर्सी पर बैठी हुई है, और उनके धड़ पर रखा यह फल पीछे की घास, और पेड़ों की हरियाली से मेल खाता हैं जिससे ऐसा लगता है की प्रकृति की यह सुंदरता, इंसान को निगल गई है। शायद इंसान इस जगह, प्रकृति से अलग है। सिमरन इन तस्वीरों के द्वारा इंसानों और प्रकृति के जटिल संबंधों के साथ साथ भूगौलिक, सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक नजरियों में मतभेदों को सामने लेकर आती हैं, और उन धारणाओं को भी, जो अक्सर किसी एक तरह की सभ्यता के संदर्भ में बना दी जाती हैं।
