Talk Series : Is It What You Think?

Panelists:    N N Rimzon, Anita Dube
Discussant: Roobina Karode

This was the first in the talk series planned around the exhibition ‘Is It What You Think (Ruminations on Time, Memory and Site), that showcased works by seventeen different artists. The works touched upon issues of oppression, violence, rape, historical identity and cultural memory which arrested the turbulent phase of Indian history in the 1990s. In this discussion, Anita Dube recapitulated the politics of the Radical Painters and Sculptures Association, its formation and quick dispersal, focusing mainly on Krishnakumar and his desire for an art that countered all possible contradictions and questioned the relationship between art practice and political engagement. Rimzon reflected upon his own practice, the way he started and the direction he thinks he has taken over the years to occupy a distinct position.
